Science That Accelerates Solutions

Science That Accelerates Solutions

It takes an average of 17 years for health research to be put into clinical practice — implementation science bridges this gap. Through developing evidence-based strategies that address barriers to HIV prevention and care for both patients and providers, implementation science accelerates the research-to-practice timeline, playing a vital role in advancing progress toward ending the HIV epidemic.

The HIV Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (ISCI) helps reduce HIV prevalence by developing and sharing generalizable implementation knowledge, making HIV research applicable to broader populations and contexts. ISCI also provides high-quality technical assistance to implementation science projects, supporting research that improves the uptake of implementation strategies and interventions.

Facilitating Collaboration

ISCI and our network of Implementation Science Hubs facilitate collaboration among HIV researchers and stakeholders, enabling resource distribution across the United States.

Generalizing Knowledge

At ISCI, we develop and refine tools that generalize HIV implementation knowledge, helping identify best practices and evidence-based strategies.

Deepening Understanding

ISCI developed the Implementation Research Logic Model (IRLM) tool to combine and organize conceptual frameworks, improving the rigor, reproducibility, and transparency of projects.

HIV Prevention and Care Interventions in Practice

Community-Centered Care: Integrating Community Health Workers Improves HIV Outcomes

A project team in Memphis, TN, worked with community partners to co-develop a series of trainings that enhanced the integration of community health workers into HIV care teams, ultimately improving health outcomes for people living with HIV.

Embracing Cultural Nuance: How Tailored Marketing Promotes PrEP among Latino Communities

Latino community organizations, leaders, and researchers developed tailored marketing materials and dissemination strategies that effectively communicated information about PrEP to the Latino community.

Be PrEPared: Enhancing HIV Awareness among Black Women

A project team working to end the HIV epidemic used three implementation strategies to address barriers to HIV care and ultimately enhance HIV awareness among Black women in Mecklenburg County, NC.

Evidence-Based Implementation Strategies

ISCI researchers developed a tool to identify Best Practice implementation strategies for HIV care and prevention, which are high-quality, replicable strategies that meet rigorous evidence criteria. This is the first tool for identifying high-quality implementation science interventions.

ISCI’s first Best Practice implementation strategy offers implementation researchers and practitioners a roadmap for addressing patient barriers to PrEP, reducing the time from initial PrEP prescription to patient pickup.

Social and Structural Barriers and Solutions

The Sociostructural Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (SISCI) is a coordination hub that supports NIH-funded projects across the United States.

SISCI advances the field of HIV implementation science through a focus on social and structural determinants of health, so that larger structural issues affecting HIV care can be addressed.
